Introduction to Cai Chien Island

Cai Chien is an island commune located in the south of Hai Ha District, approximately 8 km from Ghenh Vo Port. The island has a total natural area of ​​about 2,500 hectares, consisting primarily of hills and beaches.

In recent years, the commune has received investment in relatively comprehensive infrastructure, including a boat landing, a ferry service, a concrete road traversing the island, schools, a health station, and various other public facilities. In April 2016, the commune was also connected to the national power grid.

The commune's infrastructure and natural assets offer significant potential for economic growth, particularly in the realm of eco-tourism. With a coastline stretching over 10 kilometers—featuring fine white sand, crystal-clear blue waters, towering rows of casuarina trees, and undulating coastal dunes—the area presents an ideal setting for investors to develop seaside tourism. Recently, Cai Chien Island—along with other inhabited islands in Quang Ninh’s waters—has been designated by the province as both an eco-tourism zone and a maritime economic hub; these islands, rich in primeval forests, rare flora and fauna, and abundant natural water sources, also serve as a vital defensive bulwark for the nation's territorial sovereignty.

Anyone who has set foot on the island commune of Cai Chien is immediately struck by its pristine, poetic beauty. The landscape features rolling mountains that resemble winding dragons, stretches of fine white sand, and azure waters, all framed by surrounding islets and vast rice fields where flocks of white storks soar. When is the best time to visit Cai Chien Island?

Cai Chien is located in the Northeast mountainous climate zone, characterized by hot summers and cold winters (it is colder here than in other coastal regions). The rainy and storm season lasts from June to October—coincidentally the time when the weather is otherwise ideal for swimming in Northern Vietnam. If you plan to visit, be sure to check weather forecasts beforehand. A quick note: the heaviest rainfall usually occurs in July, so visiting during this month is a bit of a gamble.

How to get to Cai Chien Island

From Hanoi to Hai Ha

From Hanoi (or your local area), you can take a long-distance bus bound for Mong Cai and get off at the Ha Coi Bank intersection (Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Quang Ha Town). From there, take a taxi or *xe om* (motorbike taxi) to Ghenh Vo Port (a distance of nearly 10 km), which is the ferry terminal for Cai Chien.

If traveling by motorbike, you can follow Google Maps directions to Ghenh Vo Port. Since the ferries accommodate both motorbikes and cars, you can bring your own vehicle for greater flexibility in getting around.

Traveling from Hai Ha to Cai Chien Island

Ferries to Cai Chien Island depart from Ghenh Vo Port (Quang Dien Commune, Hai Ha). There are three scheduled round trips daily; departures from Ghenh Vo are at 7:00, 11:30, and 17:30, while departures from Cai Chien are at 6:00, 10:30, and 16:30. Alternatively, you can charter a small boat or speedboat to the island to save time (the crossing takes only about 15 minutes). This option is suitable for large groups, as these vessels typically require a full complement of passengers before departing.

Getting Around Cai Chien Island

• Electric Carts

This is a suitable mode of transport for large groups, especially those traveling with the elderly or young children. Electric carts can carry multiple passengers while allowing everyone to comfortably admire the scenery and enjoy the sea breeze.

• Motorbikes: Motorbike rental services are available for exploring the island; however, for maximum convenience, it is best to rent a bike directly from your homestay or guesthouse.

Accommodation on Cai Chien Island

• Homestays

While accommodation options were limited a few years ago, the number of guesthouses and homestays has grown recently as Hai Ha District promotes tourism development to make Cai Chien a key destination. The district aims to develop 100 homestay rooms to accommodate approximately 400 visitors daily.

• Camping

Another popular option is pitching tents on the beach; this provides a space for group outdoor activities while offering a low-cost accommodation alternative.
